Welcome to my website!

I have been a music educator for over 25 years. In addition to teaching in the United States I have taught music K-12 in International schools in Germany, Switzerland and Singapore. Teaching in the International Schools has enabled me to teach in a variety of settings and grade levels, from elementary to high school band, choir and general music.

In the course of my teaching experience I became very interested in the ways that students make music in non-school settings. One of my first research projects followed the musical processes of a rock band. The rock band study taught me a great deal about informal learning processes and the use of aural strategies in music learning. What I have learned through this study helped to transform my vision of my teaching and my understanding of my students' learning in my classroom. I began experimenting with using some of the processes of the rock band musicians to support the learning of my students and have found it very successful.

The forum section of this website is an out growth of workshops and summer courses that I have conducted over the past year. I have found it insightful for students to journal not only about their processes in class assignments but to share thoughts on pertinent readings as a point of departure for class dialogue.

Thanks again for coming!
